Do you have healthy pink nails...or ugly foot fungus?

Nail fungus affects about 38 million people in America.

Until recently, conventional medicine couldn’t offer a cure for the unsightly and embarrassing disease, which turns healthy nails into thick, brittle and discolored claws. OTC medications provide less than 8% cure rate at best. Terbinafine pills (Lamisil) have only a 40-50% cure rate, but have to be taken over an extended period of time. This will lead to expensive tests and multiple doctor’s visits. Relapse is very common, and many patients simply cannot take it. Sometimes doctors resort to a surgical removal of nails. Pain, trauma, downtime… – and it does NOT kill the fungus!

Advances in medical laser technologies have emerged changing the way we combat this condition. In the last three years, doctors in the U.S. started using lasers to eradicate nail fungus.

Success rates are now 75-90%.

Preparing for Your Laser Fungal Nail Treatment

What to Expect:

The consultation, exam and treatment will take about one hour. Please be at the office at least 15 minutes before your appointment. There will be no pain and you will walk out of the office just as you walked in. Insurance does not cover laser treatment but we do accept credit cards, cash and checks.

What you will need to do the day of your appointment:

1. Bring and extra pair of clean socks in a zip lock bag with you to wear after your appointment. You may also choose to wear sandals or flip flops to your appointment and skip the socks.
2. Make sure your nails are clean and trim. Remove all nail polish.
3. Wash them well and make sure they are completely dry (blow dry is best).
4. Use a brown emery file to thin the nail to the thickness of a healthy nail. You can buy a bag of these at a beauty supply.
5. Throw away all of your pre-laser treatment emery boards and sterilize (bleach) any of your non-disposable toe care items.
6. Spray all of your shoes with a fungal shoe spray.

What to buy:

1. Bag of brown emery boards
2. Anti-fungal shoe spray
3. Vicks Vapor rub (generic brands work well also)
4. Blow dryer if you do not have one.
5. If you have an allergy to eucalyptus you may use tea tree oil or manuka oil instead.

These suggestions will almost certainly keep nail fungus a thing in your past. However, your environment may promote the recurrence of nail fungus even if you take every possible precaution.

AFTER-CARE INSTRUCTIONS FOR NAIL FUNGUS LASER TREATMENT

SPECIFIC FUNGAL TOE CARE

Apply Vick's Vapor Rub 2Xs/Day*
Make sure your nails are clean and trim. Wash them well and make sure they are completely dry (blow dry is best). Use a brown emery file daily to scuff the nail prior to Vick's treatment. Use a Q-tip to coat the toenail with the Vick's, and be sure to get the gel deep into the sides of the nail and as far underneath as possible. If you have any cracks in your nail, rub deeply into them. Leave it on and let the gel absorb into the nail. Repeat twice daily.
*(If you have an allergy to eucalyptus apply tea tree or manuka oil instead.)

General Tips

1. Treat all your shoes with anti-fungal spray immediately after your treatment and at least once per week thereafter.

2. Nails grow at the rate of 1-1.5mm per month. It may take 4 to 6 months to see new clean nail growth. Keep nails trim but not too short.

3. Wear only clean socks and if you sweat change socks throughout the day. Wear sandals or flip flops when weather permits to allow access to sunshine and air.

4. Dry feet thoroughly after bathing. Blow dryer is preferred.

5. Don't trim or pick at the skin around your nails. This may give germs access to your skin and nails

You will receive a 3 month and a 6 month check up at no extra cost to ensure there has been no reinfection be sure to keep those appointments.

These suggestions will almost certainly keep nail fungus a thing in your past. However, your environment may promote the recurrence of nail fungus even if you take every possible precaution.
